In a new post, Google announced important news for Google Analytics users on March 16, 2022: the current Google Analytics version (Universal Google Analytics) will be phased out on July 1, 2023, and the new Google Analytics version (Google Analytics 4) will replace Universal Analytics in the process.
What does this mean exactly?
- As of the mentioned deadline, Google will not only replace the old Analytics version, but has also announced that historical data will no longer be available. Previously collected data will still be accessible for a period of six months.
- From an as yet unknown date, existing Universal Analytics properties will no longer be available, access to historical statistics will be lost from that date. Google has provided options for exporting the data.
- The exported data can not be imported into the new Google Analytics 4 version. Google only announces to switch to the new version as soon as possible and collect necessary historical data
Can you be a bit more specific?
- Google discontinues the old Analytics version and deletes all previous data
- There is no import option of the existing data into the new Analytics version
- Google is pushing users to make the switch in a timely manner
We don’t want to engage in lurid journalism here but rather educate and perhaps even forewarn Google Analytics users so that they can plan the next steps and take them as soon as possible.
